Technics (by Panasonic) SB-2200 Speakers

I have had my eye on these for months, and today it made sense to pick them up. These are heavy, japanese made full range systems with six drivers in each cabinet from the mid seventies. The grills are masterpieces of plastic fabrication, and look very funky. There are 10 and 12 inch woofers, a midrange and 3 tweeters in each 50 pound cabinet, and these rock!

DO NOT confuse these with the Technics tower systems, made to be sold as cheaply as possible to complete one branded Technics systems, from the nineties that are always available (for around $80) on Craigslist & Kijiji (you can find that kind of junk from JVC, Pioneer, Kenwood, Sharp and others). These were near the top of the line and sound like it!

How much did you pick these babies up for? They're amazing, I can only imagine what they sound like.

Didn't that make a version with blue grill cloth?

I very much consided these back in the mid 70's as my first real hifi speaker. It was between these and ADS 710 (I think that was model number). Because my budget got shrunk all of a sudden, I settled for Altec Model 1s which never really thrilled me. And I'm 90% sure the ones I auditioned did have the blue grill.

I own a set of two of these SB-2200A speakers and have had them since 1974 when my father bought them in Germany. I used to have 4 but 2 got damaged at a party much to my distress (blown out when power failed and came back on with high volume) and those 2 were replaced with a set of Technics SB-7000A speakers (the BIG momma of Technics, their Flagship accomplishment in speakers according to their website). I absolutely love them, and if you ever run into another set, please let me know as I would love to have four again...

Hi peeps.
I have a pair of these and they have only one 12" bass unit mid range and tweeter. The other 10" unit is just a dummy for the 12" driver to use. If you take this out and fill the hole with some mdf, I found not only do the speaker’s sound better; they also can take a bit more of a pounding!

amazing that one reader didn't know what a passive
radiator is--i doubt he improved the sound by
inadvertently creating
an infinite baffle enclosure
--good luck with that!doc

I have taken on the job of removing the dummy and filling the hole and they do sound ok and they do take a lot more of a pounding without distortion!
